Solar lanterns are growing in popularity, and Africa is a big part in that expansion. The technology is ideal for off grid places, which is most of the continent.
The International Finance Corp. (IFC) released a report, “Lighting Africa Market Trends Report”, detailing that the solar lantern market has grown 300%. In Kenya, about 2.5 million people are using off grid solar lighting products. IFC head of the Lighting Africa Program, Arthur Njagi, said that a new finance mechanism was being facilitated for 17 local importers in collaboration with a local banks. The IFC will guarantee the bank loans to the importers.
