The road towards energy sufficiency in rural Africa: The case of Pwani village in Kenya, By Harun Warui, Kenya Agricultural Research Institute

The small village of Pwani, Kenya has been transformed from extreme poverty to a community in which each house can have, at the very least, access to one lighting fixture using a solar charged 12 V battery, and one gas cooker. Distributed Energy Power in Haiti - Eco Systems and dissigno have teamed up for The Pedal Power Project.

Dissigno, a company that helps developers build innovative products and flourish in their desired marketplace, launched a pilot project, using Eco System technology, for 50 families in Bayonnais, Haiti in September 2007. Bayonnais is a community of 80,000 people without any electrical power. The Pedal Power Project created a valued product solution that is culturally sensitive, environmentally friendly, and economically sustainable. The pedal generator achieves this through an innovative technology that creates electricity through human power. Power is created through pedaling and stored in a 12-volt deep cycle battery, which in turn charges smaller 6-volt batteries (home units). Read More>

Editorial

by Sarah Adams, GVEP International CEO

Dear GVEP Partners,

The end of 2007 marks the beginning of an exciting new phase for GVEP International, with a new Management Team in place, new programmes being initiated, and new energy access products and services under development for 2008.
New Management Team: we have been joined by four new staff in London and one in South Africa. The new members of our team bring with them a wide range of skills and experience which they are already putting to good use, designing new approaches to access to energy and programmes which we will be developing from 2008 onwards. Please see the article on this page for more information on all members of our team.
New Programmes: in 2008 we will be rolling out our EU and Dutch Government funded Technical Assistance Programme (Developing Energy Enterprise Programme) in East Africa with the help of five local partners (Aga Khan Foundation, IT Power, EME East Africa, EATDN and Practical Action) and a South African Partner (GERT). This is an ambitious programme, focusing on providing business development assistance to energy entrepreneurs in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda to assist them to build up energy supply chains in rural and peri-urban communities in the region. We will also be beginning the implementation of our Russian funded programme in East Africa, focusing not only on the provision of technical assistance to small and micro entrepreneurs, but also on access to finance.
