Profile of Women and Children Development Organization 1. Establishment Women and Children Development Organization (WCDO) is an indigenous, non-governmental and non-for profit humanitarian organization established in 1995 by Ethiopian volunteers who were concerned about the devastating economic and social situation of the country caused by man-made and natural calamities. It is an organization that can work in the country in the areas that concern woman, children and marginalized communities. 2. Vision WCDO wishes to see poverty-alleviated prosperous Ethiopia. 3. Mission WCDO is dedicated to serve and bring about sustainable development changes, particularly in the livelihood of women, children and that of the poor communities at large in the Addis Ababa City Administration and the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Regional State (SNPPRS) through integrated community development programmes and poverty reduction strategies with maximum participation of stakeholders. 4. Values People-centeredness, fairness and equity, morality and ethical integrity, transparency, accountability, good governance, independence, environmental consciousness. 5. Legal Status The Ministry of Justice with Registration No. 183 has legally registered WCDO. It has signed a general agreement with the Federal Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Commission (DPPC). Moreover it has successively signed project agreements with the Civil and Social Affairs Bureau of the Addis Ababa City Administration and the Finance and Economic Development Bureau of SNPPRS and the concerned line bureaus of each administration. 6. Organizational Structure WCDO has a functional organizational structure. The General Assembly is the highest governing body. The second highest governing body is the Board of Directors. The Executive Director, who is assigned by the Board of Directors, is responsible for the implementation and management activities of the Organization. There are two departments, namely, Programming and Administration and Finance as well as two Project Coordination Offices in the operational areas of the Addis Ababa City Administration and SNPPRS. The departments and the branch offices are accountable to the Executive Director. 7. Strategic Plan WCDO has a - five-year strategic plan from 2008-2012. The plan document embodies the following programmers: 7.1. Health • Environmental Sanitation • Health Infrastructure Development and Provision of Equipment • Reproductive Health (MCH/FP & HIV/AIDS) • Prevention and Control of Malaria • Water Development • Provision of Clean and Adequate Water 7.2. Education • Provision of Supplementary Educational Services to Poor Children and Youth programme/Child sponsorship/ Daycare • Educational Infrastructure Development • Provision of Non-formal Education 7.3. Income Generation • Small Micro -enterprise Development • Saving and Credit • Marketable Skills Training 7.4. Good Governance and Conflict Management • Good Governance • Conflict Management 7.5. Old Age Care and Support 7.6. Dry land Agriculture and Environmental Protection 7.7. Livestock Development 7.8. Advocacy on Women and Children 7.9. Capacity Building 8. Achievements The operational areas of WCDO are the sub-cities of Kolfe-Kernio, Lideta and Addis Ketema in Addis Ababa City Administration, and the sub cities of Awassa and Yirgalem and as well as Borich Woreda in the Southern Nations and Nationalities and Peoples Regional state. During its existence as an NGO for the last 11 years, the organization, in agreement with the concerned Federal, regional and the Addis Ababa City Administration as well as with the collaboration of the funding agencies and the communities, has implemented several programme and project activities and has addressed the critical needs and problems of about 150,000 community members. The followings highlight the major accomplishments: Provision of loan for 300 poor women organized for income-generating activities; Provision of educational support for 5,000 poor school children; Establishment of an income generating bakery project for poor women ; Provision of tailor-made health and hygiene education to more than 15,000 community members aged 10 and above; Renovation of 77 ruined houses owned by poor households including female- headed house holds; Construction of 59 water supply points; Construction of 83 communal pit latrines each with four seats; Construction of 13 public showers (with ten rooms for men and women); Construction of 33 cloth-washing stands; Provision of 11 skips (for solid waste disposal); Construction and installation of 13 biogas facilities with communal pit latrines, and kitchens; Organization of 5000 youths into HIV /AIDS working groups;; Conducting training workshops on HIV/AIDS for pear educators, counselors, voluntary caretakers, for members of the organized working groups; Provision of marketable skill training for more than 200 youth; Construction and installation of one public library with a capacity of 70 seats; Construction and establishment of two Alternative Basic Child Education Centers/ ABECs/ for 480 primary school-aged children; Conducting training workshops and organizing experience-sharing sessions on Good Governance and Democratization for Woreda level Government officials, court officials, women's representatives, youth groups, traditional leaders, and representatives of FBOs, CBOs, and Civil Society organizations; Making a three-year project agreement with the bureau of Finance and Economic Development and other pertinent line bureaus of the SNNPRS. 9. Future Plan WCDO has yet to work more intensively and extensively on the programme areas indicated in its five year plan. In compliance with the project agreement it has signed with the Financial and Economic Development Bureau of SNNPRS, WCDO shall undertake the following major programme/project activities that will address the needs and problems of thousands of poor community members, mainly women and children: • Provision of environmental sanitation facilities • Construction of 60 communal pit latrines • Construction of 30 water supply points • Construction of 30 washing stands • Construction of 10 kitchens • Construction of 10 public showers • Establishment of 15 biogas plants • HIV/AIDS-related training for 500 home-based care takers, 360 peer educators, 125 community-based reproductive health agents • Establishing saving and credit cooperatives for 130 women • Strengthening and expanding existing alternative basic education and non-formal education • Strengthening and expanding existing community resource center in Yirgalem and establishing new one in Awassa engage in the following areas of programme activities. These include: • Construction of 30 biogas plants • Construction of boo- latrines • Construction of 30 bio-kitchens • Construction of 30 fuel-saving kitchens • Construction of 42 concrete latrines • Construction of 33 public showers • Construction of 21 clean public water points • HIV/AIDS-related training for500 home-based caretakers, 360 peer educators, 125 community-based reproductive health agents • Urban agricultureContact details
