IDEAS Energy Innovation Contest: Renewable Energy Road Shows

Aims
To promote the development of renewable energy in Chile and Peru by carrying out road shows aimed at local communities, key financial and public organisations.
Region
Latin America and the Caribbean
Status
Planning
Summary

The road shows will promote renewable technologies, provide information, conduct technical training courses, support state agencies, and gather information on needs of local people. They also aim to convince financial and public institutions that are developing renewable energy programmes to strengthen and support local markets.

This project is one of the award-winning projects of the 2009 IDEAS Energy Innovation Contest for improving energy efficiency and expanding access to renewable energy. The contest is jointly sponsored the Inter-American Development Bank and the Korean Government.

Full Description

In rural areas of Peru and Chile, there is a massive under-supply of renewable energy as many energy companies do not consider renewable energy generation to be viable on a large.

Most see renewable energy as a marginal activity and do very little to promote it to customers. To make matters worse, past attempts to employ renewable energy have been hindered by faulty installations and excessive costs, so many customers believe that renewable systems are not reliable.

This project will see road shows taken around rural areas in Peru and Chile to educate communities on green energy and to identify opportunities to create local 'articulated markets' of renewable energy and energy efficiency.

The road shows will promote renewable technologies, provide information, conduct technical training courses, support state agencies, and gather information on needs of local people. New management alternatives will be identified, knowledge transferred to interested professionals, and principal actors will be brought together.

The project will seek the buy-in of various national and international institutions which are developing renewable energy programmes, to strengthen and support local markets for green energy. It also aims to involve regional financial institutions and local authorities in participating in the development and maintenance of these local markets.
