GVEP Country Actions
GVEP’s primary products relate to the development of country programmes which recognize the importance of energy for poverty reduction, and attainment of the MDGs. Scaling up of investments in energy services targeted at the poor and unserved or underserved is therefore crucial at country level. Reorientation of existing programmes in ways that shift the emphasis from “energy for energy’s sake” to deliberate targeting of strategic development sectors like education, health and agro-enterprise, is also extremely important. Energy policies and institutions that facilitate the delivery of livelihoods-improving pro-poor energy services are an equally important dimension of GVEP’s primary products. Coordination of government, private sector, civil society, and donor agency activities to avoid unnecessary duplication and reap synergies from concerted action is therefore critical, especially at the country level. GVEP is currently concentrating on 26 countries in Africa, Latin America, and Asia.
