The GVEP Partnership was launched in Johannesburg in 2002 and subsequently held multistakeholder workshops and developed energy action plans with a number of African countries, in particular Cameroon and Ghana.

Four GAPfund projects have been completed in Africa: Tanzania (2), Kenya (1), Zambia (1). Read more>

GVEP International is now initiating new programmes in Africa, in particular:

- in East Africa: the 5 year Developing Energy Enterprise Programme through which GVEP International is working with five East African Partners. This programme began implementation in March 2008. Read More>

- in East and West Africa: during 2008-11 GVEP International will be developing energy access funds with the support of the Russian government which has committed $30 million through a World Bank Trust Fund to GVEP International's activities in these regions.

- in Southern Africa: GVEP International will be developing a regional Monitoring and Evaluation Centre which will provide services to support development agencies, governments and private project developers monitor and evaluate the impacts of their projects. A feasibility study is currently under way and will be completed in June 2008. It is hoped to implement the first pilot Centre by the end of 2008.

Training needs in the electricity sector in West Africa/ Besoins de formation aux métiers de l’électricité en Afrique de l’ouest.

May 2008 - GVEP International and 2IE (International Institute for Water and Environmental Engineering – Burkina Faso) are currently carrying out a study to respond to the desperate lack of training for the development of electricity services in West Africa. The goal of this study is first to come up with a very exhaustive mapping of the situation including all the key actors active in this area, then to design the most adapted training project to make sure West Africa is ready to respond to the growing need for electricity services in the medium and long term.  You can help with this study ! GVEP International in East Africa - March 2008

Launching a new programme of activities in East Africa, GVEP International Team members were in Uganda and Kampala in March 2008 to meet with some GVEP International Partners, as well as others who are new to the organisation.
