GVEP Tanzania activities launched

03 March, 2006
GVEP Tanzania activities were launched in August 2005, when the Tanzanian Government’s Ministry of Energy and Minerals obtained the services of ECON Analysis AS to undertake a financing facilitation study. The study will gauge experience with energy financing whilst identifying gaps and entry points for scaling up of energy services. A Rural Energy Working Group (REWG) was also established to accelerate efforts to improve access to energy services for rural populations. Based on lessons from other GVEP countries, the REWG will work to integrate energy-poverty issues into the National Strategy for Growth and Reduction of Poverty.

UNDP contributed funding to this energy scale up initiative with resources made available through GVEP, which has programmes in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. UNDP and GTZ are open to continue support to the implementation of this strategy pending endorsement by the East African Community (EAC) Energy Ministers.
