India

GVEP is in the process of reactiving activities in India. In preparation, the GVEP Technical Secretariat, in collaboration with GVEP Board Members from India, prepared a proposed strategy for implementing GVEP country actions in India, which was sent to all the partners in India for suggestions/comments in August 2005. This was followed by a visit to India by the GVEP Manager in September 2005, which included partner meetings in New Delhi and Hyderabad, and meetings with key government, NGO and private sector organisations to facilitate discussion on the draft GVEP India Strategy.

The three most significant outcomes from the visit are:

  • Acceptance, on a no-objection basis, by the Government of India (GOI) of GVEP activity in India;
  • Support from the Indian partners for the strategy and to work within the GVEP fold;
  • The need to build project-based partnerships and identify 3-4 major programmes for investment in the 1st phase of activity in India.

The Technical Secretariat has now revised the strategy taking in the suggestions/comments from the visit to India and has circulated this to all our partners in India for a final approval. The strategy is available for comment in the adjoining box.

Examples include capacity building for financial institutions and entrepreneurs to increase the extent of energy services for the poor, developing workable business models for delivering ‘last mile access’ for electricity services, and promoting the use of biofuels.
