Guatemala
Guatemala has completed the preparation of its programme for provision of energy services to reduce poverty. This programme has been officially launched on the 15th of February 2006. The programme focus emphasises the use of the energy as a development catalyst and is based on the strategic indicators from the GOG’s Poverty Reduction Strategy (2002) that contains updated information related to health, education, food security, potable water, basic sanitation, roads, electrification, productive activities, environment and natural disasters vulnerability, as well as gender related information.
The proposed investment, in two execution phases with the recommended energy applications and with the three types of renewable energy application, is the total amount of US$4,645,630.00. It is important to point out that this estimated investment is specific for hardware and doesn't include the investment in personal and other gaps that need to be covered to develop an effective and integral intervention. The objective of the initiative GVEP is to develop a program where the energy supports the state interventions in terms of educational services, health, communication, environment and productivity.
A $15 million Productive Uses for Renewable Energy Project (PURE) has also been approved, including provision of GEF support, and was launched in July.

The GVEP International Platform is growing in Guatemala
December 2007 - The GVEP International workshop in Guatemala was carried out on November 30th, 2007. The main objective was to inform, and register as members, individuals and organisations interested in being part of a national platform that focuses on the provision of modern energy services to alleviate poverty in the rural areas. Guatemala GVEP Action Plan Launched 03 March, 2006
On February 15th, the Guatamala GVEP Action Plan was launched, the original event having been postponed due to a major tropical storm, which devastated many parts of the country.
