GVEP International-MEM Coordination Platform in Peru

First regional workshop in Tacna

In 2007, the Peruvian Government asked GVEP International to set up an a platform to coordinate their renewables and biofuels energy strategy. The objective was for this platform to map existing activities in these fields, identify future needs and develop a common strategy between all stakeholders (public, private, civil) which would be implemented by funders participating in the Platform, and in particular with the support of GTZ and IDB.

In May 2008, representatives from the government, private sector, NGOs and academia, came together in Tacna, Peru, to participate in the GVEP International regional workshop to discuss the proposed strategy and raise awareness around renewables. The input from this workshop will be fed back into the national strategy as it is developed.

Speaking at the close of the meeting, Pedro Aita Gamio, the Vice Minister for Energy and Minerals, told attendees,
“After many efforts to reach consensus between all actors, finally, thanks to the comprehensive logistical and methodological support of GVEP International, the Peruvian government was able to develop strategic and operational plans for renewables and biofuels to be implemented at national and regional levels.”

The Inter American Development Bank (IDB) spokesperson, Pablo Rosenthal, described the GVEP International Platform as a highly effective method for establishing a sustainable, multi-sector strategy. “The model has been so successful that we are receiving requests to replicate it in a number of other Latin American countries, beginning with Honduras, Colombia, Guatemala and Panama.”

Bringing together many diverse GVEP International partners, the meetings also enabled the sharing of interests, experiences, expert knowledge, and business concepts.

Mario Gnecci Lombardi
, a GVEP International partner working towards reforestation of the coastal area of southern Peru, told GVEP International’s CEO, Sarah Adams,

“This meeting is wonderful for us, not only does it raise awareness locally about the importance of renewable energies and energy efficiency, but it has allowed us to meet everybody who is concerned in the sector in one place and at one time. This has advanced my projects by about 6 months at least!”
