On the 5th June, the InterAmerican Development Bank (IDB) hosted a GVEP International meeting in Tegucigalpa, Honduras to assess the interest of local stakeholders in the creation of a GVEP International Coordination Platform for Renewables and Biofuels similar to the Platform established in 2007 in Peru.

Participants to the meeting

With over 35 participants including a wide range of government ministries, development agencies, NGOs, private sector and academia, there was overwhelming agreement on the critical need for coordination in this key sector. Honduras is a country which is feeling the full effects of Climate Change through increased cyclone activity and numerous tropical storms and there is an ever growing awareness of the importance of developing a common strategy towards renewable energies and energy efficiency.

Full support for the GVEP International initiative was expressed by the government, World Bank, GTZ, USAID, associations of small renewable energy producers and networks representing NGOs.

Steven Stone, Country Representative for the IDB in Honduras, opened the meeting and underlined the importance of renewable energies for the IDB which has just announced the commitment of US$500 million to renewables initiatives in Honduras. Read More>

After a lively discussion around the leadership and activities of the Platform, it was decided to carry out a mapping of existing energy programmes and to identify priorities for the short, medium and long term. This report will be presented to a second meeting of the GVEP International Coordination Platform so that a common strategy can be agreed, permanent members of the Platform identified and commitments made to the next steps towards implementation.

In the afternoon session, Manuel Fuentes, Roberto Caceres, Ernesto Galvez, Julio Urquia and Anibal Osorto Pinel presented the GVEP International’s Honduras GAPfund projects (IT Power and Ahdesa) Read More>
