GVEP’S ACTIVITIES IN PERU


MEM-GVEP Coordination Platform

April 10th 2007: the Government of Peru signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the implementation of the "Global Village Energy Partnership International" Platform in Peru.

May 16th 2007: The Government held the First Meeting of the GVEP Platform to determine the terms of reference and the first activities of the Platform.

July 7th 2007: An inter-ministerial workshop was held to begin the planning process.

August 2007: Under IDB funding, Practical Action completed an assessment of the existing status of renewable energies and biofuels in Peru. This assessment would form the basis for the September workshop below.

September 15th 2007: the "Second Workshop of Concerted Planning on Renewable Energy and Bio - Fuels" examined the results of the Practical Action study and outlined the process to complete an energy action plan as well as identifying immediate actions for implementation. Other Activities in Peru

From 17th to May 19th 2007, the "Ist Congress of Bio-Fuels and Renewable Energy: Clean Energy for All" was organized in Lima, Peru by the Ministry of Production, the Ministry of Agriculture, MEM, the German Technical Cooperation - GTZ, PROINVERSIÓN, Practical Actions - ITDG, with the participation of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean - CEPAL, BID, National Council of Science and Technology - CONCYTED, Deutscher Entwicklungsdienst - DED, Petroperú, among others.

During the 3 days' event, international and national experts considered public policies in renewable energy in Latin America, development issues, the challenges of bio-fuels, renewable energy (solarthermal, photovoltaic, hydro, wind, geothermal), the situation of bio-ethanol (sugar cane, sorghum, sweet, yam), bio-diesel production (African palm oil, canola, jatropha or pinenut), the potential of diverse products, the legal aspects, projects, financing, among other thematic topics. This was an event where the participants could learn about the different alternatives sources of energy generation, as well as evaluate the best possibilities for each region.

Mrs. Sarah Adams, CEO of GVEP International, and Alba Gamarra, Director of the Information Center on Renewable Energy, CINER, presented GVEP International at this event and a strategy for coordination which would develop into the GVEP Peru Platform.
